Cobra Rock

Cobra Rock

This was the rock referred to by many as Cobra Rock, some chose to call it Indian Head Rock. The rock was an awesome sight when one walked into the canyon and saw it balanced there. Cobra Rock appeared to defy the laws of gravity and physics as it stood there leaning back, balanced on a narrow base. The formation included a flared hood and an eye. The hood even appeared to be flared from the backside of the rock.

The Cobra was relatively easy to find. It was in the same pasture as Castle Rock, just follow the trail to the southeast and look west.

Cobra's HeadHere the head is ominously sticking above the rock lines.

Cobra Rock from the westThis view was from the west, on top of the canyon wall, looking east at the back of the rock. Sadly the rock collapsed during an unusually strong windstorm. There was some speculation that deer hunters sighting in high-powered rifles at the base caused the rock to fall. The base still stands though, as a memory to those of us who marveled at the sight. There are no pitted areas from the abuses of a rifle. We can only hope that it really did succumb to natural causes and not from the carelessness of man.

Cobra Rock is in Eastern Gove County.
